Colombia and rebels to seek bilateral ceasefire; Colombian to scale back military action

BOGOTA, Colombia – Negotiators say the Colombian government and leftist rebels will seek to work out a cease-fire by both sides that would end the country’s more than five-decade long conflict.

Colombia has agreed to scale down military action if the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia suspend all attacks.

In a joint statement read in Havana on Sunday, negotiators for both sides said the de-escalation would start July 20. The FARC already announced it would implement a unilateral cease-fire on that date, one of several it has initiated during 2 1/2 years of peace talks.

Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos is applauding the announcement on Twitter as a significant step.
